Unfortunately for many PS3 owners, the YLOD has become a major cause of frustration, and disappointment.
The yellow light of death YLOD is a manufacturing fault. Its compact design, and Sony’s choice of inferior parts, means that over time and constant use, the PS3 most likely will break down at some point.
The intense heat that the PS3 generates dries out the solder, which is the life blood of the machine. Once the solder becomes dry enough, cracks will start to appear. Over time these cracks will grow, eventually breaking vital connections, and therefore resulting in the yellow light of death YLOD.
This problem was not exclusively owned by the PS3. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has it Red Ring of Death, which essentially was caused by the same overheating problem. Microsoft though, was kind enough to extend its warranty on this problem to 3 years. Sony has not followed suit.
Now to the important part, in most cases this problem can be fixed.
Through a process of re flowing heat through the affected areas, applying flux, and applying good quality thermal paste, your PS3 should be brought back to life.
The most important part of the repair process, is in which method the affected areas are exposed to the intense heat needed to re flow the machine. Only quality heat re flow machines should be used, and not a heat gun which is operated by hand, which is highly inaccurate, and in some cases cause more damage.
Only an experienced technician should perform these repairs.
Unfortunately in the instance of the repair failing, there will be no charge for this service.
