The Playstation 3 Yellow Light of Death is a serious hardware failure, caused by overheating. The constant overheating causes the soldering under the GPU to crack and break the connection to the motherboard, resulting in the Yellow Light of Death, otherwise known as the YLOD.
If your PS3 can no longer read discs, it will most likely mean that the Blu Ray laser will need replacing. Firstly a general service will be performed to see if the laser can be reconditioned, if this proves to be unsuccessful, then there is no other alternative but to replace the laser.
